Intro Post 10.26.10
I got my internship because over the summer I decided that I wanted to intern with the City Council man Mark Salinas. My dad and him are good friends so I asked my dad for his contact information. When I was in contact with him we set up a meeting and we talked about the WLE process and then he told me he wasn't working for the city on fridays since he's in charge of The Kids Breakfast Club so I told him that I wouldn't mind doing that with him. The Leadership Skill I have to use is Communicate Effectively because I have to constantly talk to parents about the organization and I have to be speaking spanish the whole time. My mentor is Mark Salinas he's in charge of The Kids Breakfast Club, he's a City Council member, and he's a Professor at Cal State East Bay. My internship is in Hayward near the City Hall. On the first Friday of the month i'll be going to the Latino Round Table meeting to network with other business owners in the area. The rest of the fridays i'll be at the office with him calling parents to make sure they know about the breakfast the next day, and we make sure we have all the supplies for the following day.

I haven't gone to my internship since shadow day because on the first day of internship I was busy with my family dealing with family issues. Instead I stayed at Mario's house with all my family and worked on other things and went to church. I didn't look for an internship because I already have one so I didn't need to look for one. I don't need any additional help from people I just need to make up my hours.

My internship serves families in Hayward and in Newark. They serve breakfast to mostly low income students in elementary and to their families on Saturday mornings in elementary schools in Hayward and in Newark but it's open to any family no matter what background. Their morals and how they stick to their values is what I think is a big positive thing about my internship since they actually go out their and serve the breakfasts to the students. One thing that might not be done as well as it could be is advertisement. I don't know if enough students know about the organization,

I didn't go to my internship since I was at my church's Winter Retreat at Hume Lake so I spent my day with all of our California sister churches. My day consisted of waking up super early to get ready for breakfast at 7 a.m and then service at 8 a.m and then we had another service with only the G.A.N.G Girls until 1 p.m for lunch and then we had free time until 6 p.m and with in that time frame we went exploring the frozen lake and talking to the pastors and having competitions with the other regions that had gone. At 6 p.m we had another service with a well know Pastor in our ministry and I stayed in the chapel until 11:30 p.m with another of my G.A.N.G Girl. I had a breakthrough that day and I had finally gave myself to God.

My mentors name is Mark Salinas, he is the Executive Director of TKBC, professor at CSUEB, and a Hayward City Council men. The workplace where I intern is in Hayward near the Movie Theatre. While I am there my mentor contacts many people who help our organization by getting locations, parent educators, and works on the fiances of the organization. He became interested in this because.... He would advise someone who would want to work here to just start at a volunteer and earn your way up the ladder although you won't get paid.

I started my keynote for the parents to learn about the organization. For my project I'm creating a keynote that I will be presenting to parents informing then about our organization for the Spring Session. I plan on making 5 slides a week and then communicating with my mentor when I'll be presenting my keynote. My plan on getting caught up in my hours are to work 8 hours each time I go to my internship.

As I look around the office it's a really small office but it's not a small organization. The only people in the office is me and my mentor but there are other people that work with the organization that don't work in the TKBC office. We run primarily on volunteers so they don't come into the office. Our organization provides students in Hayward and their families with nutritional breakfast on days that school is not in session. Our workplace is welcoming to anyone who is dedicated to make a difference in the community and is willing to help. So people who work with our organization are at all different levels of education we have volunteers who are in middle school up to the mayor of hayward who volunteers with us also. The office of the organization is located in Hayward on Second Street but we do our community work in the elementary school in Hayward such as Burbank, Palma Ciea, & Bowman. The office is really spacious and open with 2 desks and one big table for meetings.
BLOG 10: My last day at WLE”
I participated in a meeting with the HUSD Food Services about creating a program in the summer where children could go to get Breakfast & Lunch. Then I went the graphic design place with my mentor to create the logo for the program. Throughout the whole internship I learned that I really want to be an active person in the community helping people who are like me and also less fortunate then me. I also learned that the work world is not easy to get into an you really need an education in order to get a good job and sometimes it's not about what you know but about who you know. I did finish my project and I was able to finish it because I knew if I hadn't done it my mentor would have got really upset and I didn't want to let him down. I think I may need to return to my internship but just to take photos. I am not behind so I have no plan!!
Post 1: Job Shadow Day: January 6th
I got to my internship at 8:45 in the morning and left around 1:30 in the afternoon. The whole day I was on a computer reading a PowerPoint about the hospital's policies and taking a test on the different policies. While I was doing that I thought it was interesting that there is a lot of things people might not know about how much hospitals do and how many laws there are protecting patients. Towards the end of the day we got to eat which I really liked because I was really hungry the whole day.
My mentor's name is Jocie. The organization I'm working for is St. Rose Hospital in Hayward. My mentor told me she'll tell me my duties when I go next Wednesday. I got my internship because my aunt works in the Human Resources Department and since all the internship positions were full she personally ask all the managers she knew if they wouldn't mind having another intern and her manager told her that she wouldn't mind. I also had to go and fill out a bunch of paper work and get serval shots to show I'm healthy enough to intern there.

Post 2: First Day!
At my WLE for the first official Wednseday I had to make a lot of copies for people of each department and sort out a lot of paper work. Once I sorted out the papers I put them in the mail room to be sent off to the different departments. By lunch my mentor noticed I didn't have my badge so I could get free lunch. So I had to get my badge but before I was able to get lunch but tha cafateria man was nice enough to believe me but I still had to get my badge for the future. So I had to get cleared from Occupational Health by showing them that I got all the required shots. Overall my first day went really well it wasn't all that fun but I got to see a lot of the behind the sences things that go on in a hospital. I think I impressed my mentor because I was able to do a lot of tasks at once and I would finish them pretty fast. The areas in which I think I'm going to need to work on more is understanding the ways she does things and picking up on her thricks because when I would do something my way she would tell me another more effective way.
I would say that I was pretty busy the whole time because when ever I had any down time I would start making copies because there were so many copies that had to be made. I didn't really have any questions for my mentor I would just ask her questions when I was done with a task and I wanted to know what else she needed help with. While I was there I asked her questions during lunch but just to get to kow her and she seems really nice and cool and she's very comforting like she never seemed bothered by me asking what else she what me to help with. The only question I have for my Academic Seminar teacher is "Are we going to have to call you everytime we get to our internship?"

Post 3: Work Work Work!!
My internship isn't really what I had pictured. I thought that just because I was going to be in the hospital I was going to be seeing patients in and out but what I do has nothing to do with the patients what so ever. All I do the whole day is deal woth paper work amd make photo copies. What I found surprising at my internship is that they are all nice and all get along so well as if they were more then just co-workers and they are also all very nice and welcoming towards me and they try and get to know me. I thought they would all just ignore me since I was just their intern and they would pretend as if I wasn't there but that isn't the case.
What I learned at my internship that I didn't know before was how to sort mail on my own so I could take it to the mail room so that the other departments could get their mail. What I hope to learn at my WLE next week is how to make certificates for the people that past there test so my mentor wouldn't have to deal with that if one goes missing I could just make another one. Also what I hope to learn is just more simple ways I can help out my mentor so she won't have as much work on her hands to deal with.

Post 5: Leadership Leadership Leadership...
The skills I am developing at my intership are Solving Problems Resourcefully. I have to use this Leadership Skill at my WLE because my mentor has other interns that go on other days and we all have our own ways of doing the same thing so I have to solve the problem of figueing out how they were doing the task and trying to follow the way they were doing it so I don't have to start the task all over again. The skill I learned at Impact that have helped me at my WLE is Communicating Effectively. I feel more comfertable talking to adults in a more proffesional manner because of the Exhibitions that we do which helps me takl to all the people that I get introduced to at our office.
My role as a student isn't really different than my role as a intern because i still get told what I have to do. I would say the two differences in being a intern and a student is that I don't have to ask to go to the restroom and I could talk and eat candy during wprk time.

Post 6: Grading Myself on WLE
College Work Habits: 4: I think I deserve a 4 beccause I arrive to my WLE on time or early all the time and I'm always perpared and on task the whole time and not goofing off.
Leadership Skills: 4: I think I deserve that grade because I do have to manage my tasks effectively so I can do other things and I also solve my problems that I encounter effectively to try and not bother my mentor the least possible. I also have to talk to a lot of adults so I have to be able to Communicate Effectivelly. The other Leaderships Skills aren't reallly applicable at my WLE so far so it's not like I'm not doing them it's just I don't have any task that I really have to apply then to because my tasks are simple so I don't have to Thik Critically and I can't make them creative because they have to be done a certain way so I can't apply Creative Expression.
Metacognition: 4: I think I deserve that grade because I have learned more about myself through this internship such as getting a better idea of what I have to do in order to do the career I want to do since I get to see that behind the sences of the hospital. Also I've learned more about how to get a "job" and that it's not as esy as how I thought it is and I just realize now that things in the real world aren't given to you which is sort of a news flash for me. I also think that I'be learned that as a worker I really like to get things done for people like if someone tells me to get a task done I like to know that I finished that task it's really rewarding to me once I'm done.
Application of Knowledge: 3.5: I apply my knowledge at my WLE by taking what they teach me in a couple seconds and doing it every time I'm there. So I learn pretty fast because I pay attention so I don't have to ask and bother them later on.
Mastery of Knowledge: 4: I show that I know what I learn by not bothering my mentor so they can get what they got to do done and y using my little cheat sheets my mentor made to make my tasks easier and so that I can get things done.

Blog 7: Peoples Blogs
I read Tera, George, Michelle, Christina, and Julie Galenders blog. The best one to me was George's since in his hes very honest and his are pretty well written and you can hear him in them all. It doesn't seem like a lot of people are doing the blogs and I think its because they forget. I think we are all learning from our WLE's maybe some more then others but were all learing totally different things so we're not really comparing the same things. For example Christina is learning alot at a vet and I'm learning a lot about how hospitals run so it's about the same. I don't really get bored because there is always something for me to do and my mentors like changing it up so I don't have to do the same thing all the time. This WLE I got to enter employees information in the computer which I haven't done the whole time I've been there.
Blog 8: Analyzing my Workplace
My workplace is a small office but it's part of a big company that has over 1,000 employees. Since my office is small I think I get to know the people I'm working with rather than the other people that work at a big office who might not know their co-workers as well as I might. I report to my mentor and my mentor reports to her manager who is also the manager of another department and I not really sure who she reports to since I don't really work with her directly. I am happy with their boss because they know my dad and it's cool knowing that some of the CEO's of the hospital know my parents and want me to succeed in life. My workplace is professional when it has to be and at times we goof around and have fun since I'm at a hospital I think they all have some type of college education. I like my workplace since we have fun and joke around. It makes me want to get a college degree even more because I want to be in an environment like that and being there has made me want to pursue my nursing dream even more since I get to met a bunch of nurses.
Post 9: What do we do??
Today I had to make labels....ALL day. I had to make two labels for each employee in the hospital, and theres a lot of employees at St. Rose. I had to do them for another department so I practically served as someone elses intern/volunteer today but I didn't mind because the lady that I had to help today is really nice. I'm not sure what my mentor had to do today I know that she usually puts test scores into the comuter and prints certificates for employees and she makes sure that all the employees that come in trying to register for a class get in the class. A project that I'm thinking about doing is the hospitals coorpriate compliance binders. I have to make about 30 of them all on my own for our department's manager.
Post 10: Over Time...
I have about 74 hours so far I think so I guess I'm ahead of time. I don't think I need to do over time during spring break. Today I sorted test like I usually do so I didn't do anything new but I don't really mind it since I like knowing what I'm doing when i get there. I have not done anything for my WLE project because I do not know what I'm going to do for my project.
Post 11: Interview:
I can not do the interview because I do not have my mentor's personal phone number and I don't want to call her while she is working because I know it would be a hassle since she is busy throughout the day but the next time i go to my internship I will ask her the interview questions and update this blog.
Post 12: UGHHH...Internet!!!
The school website isn't opening so I don't know the prompt. :( So far for my project I haven't done much for it beside figure out what I'm actually going to do for it. I'm planning on making a test about school safety and what makes a safe Impact and I'm going to teach a lesson on it to see if me teaching helped the students. I'm planning to present how I learned that by making test for the people in your work/school place it helps them and others and thats what my internship does. I have to create the test and then take it to the people at my internship for them to make edits then once it's done I have to do the lesson and then make my presentation based on the data.
Post 13: How my WLE project is going.
Today I arrived before my mentor so I had to ask one of the other ladies who works in the same department to let me in the office. I started sorted evaluation forms from different test to file them since I saw that they were piling up. Once my mentor came people started bringing other papers that I had to sort since other volunteer didn't sort them correctly. After all the sorting I had to update some binders for the hospital then I had to enter test information into the tracker and print certificates for the rest of the day.
This week I started typing up my test that I'm going to teach the lesson on but in my own time not at my internship. I have to finish the test so that next week one of my mentors can edit it and I can teach the lesson. Im not behind in my hours I actually just need 3 more hours to be done with my 100 hours.

Post 14: Almost Done
I'm planning on having my dad surprise our department with food from our restaurant since my mentor really likes the food from there as a thank you to them for having me there. I want to bring rice to the potluck since people never really bring rice so we just eat a bunch of different entries topped with some red vines.
Today at my internship I had to sort papers in the morning then my mentor had me correct tests that employees turned in. After I corrected then I had to enter then into the tracker and once I put all the test into it i printed certificates for them. Lastly I had to sort them by department and mail them out. This week I have to instruct the class for students to take and gather up kids who want to take it.

Post 15: My last day at WLE
On my last day at my internship I did everything I usually do with the testes and toward the end of the day I had to go around helping a Spanish speaking lady pay her bill. What I did for my mentor was I had my dad bring us lunch but my mentor and everybody in the office was really busy so we couldn't enjoy our lunch like we usually do. I did thank my mentor a lot of times and through my letter. I'm not behind on my hours so I don't got any plan :)
